Track conditions Labour weekend

Luxmore Hut to bush line Iris Burn: Moderate
Avalanche danger:  Expect 20-30cm of snow on the track, with isolated wind loaded pockets over 50cm and deeper in places.

If attempting to cross the tops, be prepared for longer travel times. Don’t be afraid to turn around if conditions worsen.
Avalanche activity could increase during Saturday and Sunday’s heavy rain.

People looking to run/walk across the Alpine section of the Kepler track this weekend (labour weekend) should be extra mind-full that during Saturday’s heavy rain avalanches could become active.

At present the alpine section of track has roughly 20-30cm between Luxmore and Hanging Valley shelter. In places (due to localised wind loadings) snow will be over 50cm deep. Heavy rain predicted for Fiordland on Saturday will see avalanche activity increase for a time during the main intensities (predicted from mid day onwards). Main concerns are areas just past the Forest Burn Shelter.

Another smaller front is predicted for mid day Sunday, followed by a cold southerly clearing on Monday. This will see light snow accumulations to around bush line. People are advised to turn around if weather deteriorates, and plan their trips by the weather. Expect slower travel times due to plugging through snow, and exposed conditions due to the weather forecast.
